Nagurney Presents Paper at the Frontiers in Engineering Education Conference

Ladimer S. Nagurney, Professor of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering in CETA presented the paper, Software Defined Radio for Communications, at the 48th Frontiers in Engineering Education Conference, held in San Jose, CA, last week. Professor Nagurney's research on which the paper was based was funded by his 2016 Vincent B. Coffin Grant.

In addition, Professor Nagurney won the conference social media Twitter contest for his tweet at the Virginia Tech booth in the exhibits. For his win, Cypress Semiconductor Inc. will be donating Digital Signal Processing development boards to CETA.

Architecture Faculty Sawruk and Hegenauer Present Papers at International Conferences in Sweden and Switzerland

Associate Professor Theodore Sawruk and Assistant Professor Jason Hegenauer traveled to Sweden and Switzerland to present papers on historic Connecticut structures and passive design sustainability.  “How Sustainable was Connecticut’s Historic Saltbox House?” by T. Sawruk, T. Adekunle, J. Hegenauer was presented at the 3rd International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings in Visby, Sweden.  “The Italianate Villa: Natural Ventilation in the Service of Family and Home during the 1800s,” by T. Sawruk, and Natural Ventilation and the New England Saltbox: Historically Proven, Sustainable Renewed,” by J. Hegenauer & T. Sawruk were presented at the 13th International Conference on Advanced Building Skins in Bern Switzerland.  Professor Sawruk was also the Session Chair for Natural Ventilation and Thermal Behavior of the Building Envelope.  All three papers are available online or via the conference proceedings, located on the conference websites.

Stefan Keilich, graduate student in mechanical engineering, Tom Eppes, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Ivana Milanovic, professor of mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA), presented a paper at the October 2018 COMSOL Conference in Newton, MA. The conference brings together developers and researchers to present their findings in the area of multiphysics modeling.

 The paper, ‘Design of an Electro-Osmotic Microfluidic Mixer’ discusses the results of an inquiry-based learning project funded by a CETA faculty/student engagement grant. The technical focus of the work involved a class of microfluidic mixers that use a voltage field to accelerate the diffusion process between two liquid species in an electrolytic solution. Over the past two decades, these types of ‘lab on a chip’ devices have attracted much attention and are currently used in the food, chemical, and biomedical fields to analyze a range of fluid and chemical properties. Their small scale requires small fluid samples and only seconds to obtain accurate readings of such parameters as glucose level, pathogen presence, and DNA sequences. The COMSOL® microfluidics module was used to investigate two geometric approaches using both stationary and time-dependent studies. A design of experiment (DoE) was conducted to evaluate values of key variables.  The vortical structures within the velocity flow field were investigated as well as the relative molar species concentrations at the outlet.

CETA First–Year Students and Mentors Support Hawk Nation


On Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, over 200 College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) First – Year students, led by their CETA Student Ambassadors & Leadership Society mentors, attended the Hartford Hawks men’s soccer game. At this initial meeting, CETA first-year students spent time with their mentors, socialized with their classmates, and cheered on the Hawks!
Creating a strong sense of University spirit, preparing first-year students for successful careers that are driven by their passions, and providing an environment where we respect and celebrate our diversity are some of the key elements CETA first-year students are introduced to during their initial Dialogue classes. Thanks to all who participated and assisted! GO HAWKS!!

CETA’s Timothy Adekunle Publishes Peer-Reviewed Article in Journal of Intelligent Buildings International

Assistant Professor Timothy Adekunle in the Department of Architecture, College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) publishes a peer-reviewed journal article titled: “Post-occupancy evaluation on people’s perception of comfort, adaptation and seasonal performance of sustainable housing: a case study of three prefabricated structural timber housing developments" in the Journal of Intelligent Buildings International (Taylor & Francis). The Journal of Intelligent Buildings is a highly preferred and top-ranking journal that focuses on scholarly work on intelligent buildings and cities (people, innovative technologies, and sustainability). The peer-reviewed journal article discusses the results of the post-occupancy evaluation conducted in different prefabricated timber housing developments. The study investigated occupants’ perception of comfort, adaptation to the thermal environment, and seasonal performance of the buildings. Assistant Professor Adekunle co-authored the scholarly work with Professor M. Nikolopoulou (a Professor of Sustainable Architecture at the University of Kent, UK). Assistant Professor Adekunle served as the first author and lead investigator for the project. The work is an international collaborative research work between the University of Hartford and the University of Kent, UK. The peer-reviewed article provides an insight into occupants’ perception of comfort and adaptation in prefabricated timber buildings. The research identifies the significant impact of control on occupants’ comfort and adaptation. The study concludes that prefabricated timber buildings perform better in winter than summer.

Professor Petry Receives NCARB Award

Architecture Associate Professor Elizabeth Petry, AIA was one of only ten architecture faculty selected, from across the nation and beyond, for the highly competitive inaugural session of the NCARB Scholars in Professional Practice Program set in Washington, DC in August 2018.   The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Scholars in Professional Practice is an entirely new program to address current and future development of strong academic leaders in the professional practice community. This structured, multi-day course supported the development of faculty as teachers of professional practice in the program, leading to recognition as a Professional.  All expenses related to travel and participation were covered by NCARB.   The intensive three day NCARB Scholars in Professional Practice Program was a mix of presentations and interactive sessions, scholars explored several topics related to teaching professional practice, including: the future of academia and practice, ethics in architecture, business strategies and financial management, law and professional liability, communications and marketing, and teaching methods and curriculum development.  Professor Petry was eligible to apply for the program because she teaches ARC 623 – Advanced Professional Practice in our graduate program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).  She developed and has been teaching the Professional Practice course every spring its inception in 2006.  It is a required course of the University of Hartford’s Master of Architecture program.  It was noted in her letter of support that “At our last re-accreditation visit from NAAB, in March 2017, the visiting team noted the exceptional high quality of the Advanced Professional Practice course taught by Professor Petry.  In their Visiting Team Report the team praised her Advanced Professional Practice course.  Their assessment of each of the five criteria of Realm D: Professional Practice was “Met with Distinction”.  No higher praise can be given.”  The NAAB visiting team commented, “The student work in ARC 623 Advanced Professional Practice is distinctive.  The course is well organized, thorough, and well regarded by the students, and is taught in a manner that is engaging and effective.”  At the NCARB Scholars in Professional Practice Program the NAAB Associate Director, Ellen S. Cathey, AIA noted that of 25 NAAB programs re-accredited from 2015 – 2018 that Petry’s course was one of only three to receive this distinction.
