National Medal for Merit in Architectural Acoustics
An unexpected announcement was made at the CETA commencement ceremony in May - Paul Mangelsdorf '18 and Jacob Ott '18 had won the 2018 Robert Bradford Newman Student Medals for Merit in Architectural Acoustics.
This highly selective national award, administered by the Acoustical Society of America, is named for Robert B. Newman of BBN (Bolt, Beranek & Newman, one of the original acoustical consulting firms). Students selected for the Newman Medal must have demonstrated excellence in this discipline and in the application of acoustical design principles in the course of their studies.
Mangelsdorf and Ott had participated in a research project studying the transparency of an architectural grille used in a new concert hall at Clayton College in Minnesota. The results of their investigation were presented at the Acoustical Society of America's national conference this spring.
Mangelsdorf graduate cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, majoring in Acoustical Engineering & Music. Originally from Lagrangeville, New York. Mangelsdorf has accepted a position as an acoustic engineer with Thornburn Acoustical Consulting in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Ott graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, majoring in Acoustical Engineering & Music. Ott hails from Vernon, CT, and has accepted a position as an acoustic engineer with AKRF Acoustic Consultants in New York City.
